Hello, I’m Duncan Wells – principal of Westview Sailing and features writer for Sailing Today magazine. Westview Sailing is a recognised RYA shore based training centre offering Day Skipper and Yachtmaster shore based navigation courses. We run these over 7 weeks, one evening a week and then a weekend. A lot of students arrive having done no boating at all and this is their first step towards getting the Day Skipper certificate – the full Day Skipper certificate has two parts, the shore based certificate which you do first and in the classroom and then the practical certificate which you do out on the water over 5 days. And we have students who are sailors and students who are motor boaters; the navigation side of things is the same for both, it is only the practical courses which differ.
Our next Day Skipper course starts on Monday 17th January at 1830, here at the Community Centre in the Mary Smithells room. If you’re interested in boating you’ll find it’s a lot of fun.

I notice that one of the evenings is Valentine's Day. We may have to work around that, we will see. We will be at the Chalfont St. Peter Community Centre, Gravel Hill, Chalfont St Peter, Bucks. SL9 9QX . The course costs £325 plus £25 if you need a set of dividers and plotter. I always say that one can afford to miss up to two nights during the course but any more than this puts quite a strain on the individual to catch up.
If you would like a place please let me know as soon as possible as people are showing interest already and booking the spaces. A £50 deposit secures a place. You can pay this straight to the Westview Sailing account at Santander A/C No 24078005 Sort Code 09-01-27, the balance can be paid on the first evening. Sorry to mention money.
We now have training videos on the Westview Sailing website and students can and do use these as a refresher to what we have gone through in class. They are also stand alone modules for the course. In time all parts of the course will be up there in video form. You will also find a number of Sailing Today boat handling and seamanship articles which may be of interest.
Finally, we also have a Yachtmaster theory course starting on Thursday 13th January and running for 7 weeks. Again please let me know if you would like a place.
